"Heavy white silk with a low neckline and a tight waist and sleeves that fall from my wrists to the floor. And pearls. Everywhere pearls. Stitched into the dress and in ropes at my throat and forming the crown for the veil." - Catching Fire, Chapter 17
Wedding Dress time! It is wedding season after all,and being maid of honor in three weddings within one year, I feel I have a bit of experience in this area. ;) So we didn’t get the silk or the pearls. I don’t think this is what Cinna had envisioned. I’m OK with the dress because it’s actually very Capitol Couture. It feels like something they might have picked during their process of narrowing down her wedding dress. But what’s most important to me is that she ends up with those wings! She doesn’t have the sleeves on this dress like she was supposed to, so I don’t see how she’ll get her mockingjay wings, but I’ll withhold judgment until I see those. For now, this is Reel, not real, but not damaging. What do you guys think?
"The reaping only takes a minute. Effie, shining in a wig of metallic gold, lacks her usual verve. She has to claw around the girls’ reaping ball for quite a while to snag the one piece of paper that everyone already knows has my name on it. Then she catches Haymitch’s name. He barely has time to shoot me an unhappy look before Peeta has volunteered to take his place." - Catching Fire, Chapter 13
I love Effie’s face in the above still. She’s obviously upset, both at the situation and the fact that they’re saluting, which will only make things worse for the duo. That bit isn’t in the book, but I like that it’s in the movie. I feel like it could and would happen.
One piece I’m hoping they don’t leave out of the reaping scene is Peeta’s volunteering, though I think they might. It would save time, I admit, but I think it’s important for his character development as well as Haymitch’s. What do you guys thing? What do you want/expect from the reaping scene?
"Enobaria looks to be about thirty, and all I can remember about her is that, in hand-to-hand combat, she killed one tribute by ripping open his throat with her teeth. She became so famous for this act that, after she was a victor, she had her teeth cosmetically altered so each one ends in a sharp point like a fang and is inlaid with gold."- Catching Fire, Chapter 16
I’m OBSESSED with the fact that they kept this detail. I don’t know if I see any gold in there, but that’s obviously not the important piece here. It looks like some of the finer, more relevant details are making their way in. This is important, as it speaks to the true horrors the victors feed into after they win and become a part of the freak show for the capitol’s entertainment. The game’s not over just because you win. I could never really decide if Enobaria did this by her own choice or if she was… encouraged by the good president to increase her hype and fame. What do you guys think? Are you psyched to see her pointed fangs?
This is the first superficial difference I’m going to discuss. Obviously it has no major impact on the story or the plot. I imagine no one is throwing up their arms in disgust at the new quarter quell clothing, but if you see below, and I’m sure you all remember ;), they’re pretty different from the book description.
What do we think? Just to make them look cooler? Any larger reason at play here?
"This year’s tribute outfit is a fitted blue jumpsuit, made of a very sheer material, that zippers up the front. A six-inch-wide padded belt covered in shiny purple plastic. A pair of nylon shoes with rubber soles." - Catching Fire, Chapter 18
